The cold weather is most definitely here in the UK! With the cost of living high (along with energy prices) it is going to be a difficult time for many families. You might have to make difficult decisions between heating or eating which is why the Lullaby Trust published guidance last year with new winter guidance.
Research shows that it is safer for babies to be cooler rather than overheating as this increases the chances of SIDS. So bear this in mind before wrapping your baby up in thick layers in order to keep them warm.
If your baby is sleeping in their own separate sleep space, such as a cot or Moses basket in the winter months and you are using a baby sleeping bag:
do not be tempted to add extra blankets on top of this.
If you think your baby is cold add an extra layer of clothing.
choose a different tog for the different seasons.
Check the manufacturer’s guidelines for the baby sleeping bag that you choose .
If your baby is sleeping in their own separate sleep space, such as a cot or Moses basket in the winter months and you are using sheets or blankets:
use layers rather than thick, padded blankets or a duvet.Â
If you are using sheets and blankets, they should be firmly tucked in (not higher than the shoulders) to avoid the risk of your baby’s head becoming covered by loose bedding.
Only use duvets for 12 month babies and older.Â
If you think your baby is cold, add an extra blanket or layer of clothing to your baby.
If you are bed-sharing in the winter months:
The Lullaby Trust recommends a baby sleeping bag when bed-sharing rather than loose bedding.Â
Keep adult bedding at your waist height and add an extra layer of clothing if you are cold.
The warmth generated by an adult in the same bed as a baby may create a warmer environment, so adjust bedding and/or clothing for your baby accordingly.
